Supersonic Festival 2009

This weekend has been one of those full-on weekends which included covering a great wedding on Saturday at Studley Castle but also shooting at the Supersonic Festival in Birmingham for both Rock Sound and Metal Hammer magazines. All 3 days were long but great fun.

It all started on Friday with the first day of Supersonic – a festival held over several areas at the Custard Factory, the same place where our studio is located. This means that Supersonic is the only festival where I can see the main stage from my desk! 🙂 It’s a very eclectic and leftfield festival with acts that are always entertaining or interesting, even if they’re not all musically to my tastes. And occasionally you can discover an amazing band you may never have heard of before.

Here are just a few images I captured at the festival…

The loudest band I think I have ever experienced – Sunn O))). Apparently they hit 130 decibels on Friday night which is the equivalent of a Military jet aircraft taking off from an aircraft carrier! My ears were humming all day at the wedding because I forgot my earplugs!

Friday ended with the almighty roar of Taint.

Sunday included Arbouretum and one of my fave bands of the weekend, 65daysofstatic.

Pontiak and Jarboe.

Earthless and Head Of David.

Sunday’s headliners, Goblin.

Supersonic Festival is certainly not for everybody. It attracts a diverse and open-minded crowd from all over the world to see such a unique line-up of bands and acts. I love it!

  1. My housemate went to Supersonic but mostly saw the electronica stuff. Take any photos of some of the headliners there (like Venetian Snares?) I know there’s not as much action in DJ / live set shots, but people still like to see them 🙂
