Photographing winter weddings in Montreal will always bring about certain challenges. The weather is almost certain to be cold, possibly snowing, and therefore outdoor photos are likely to be limited. Then there’s the fact that the natural light fades soon after 4pm. Having said that, I do love a great winter wedding for other reasons. They tend to have a very cosy vibe to them and the light, when it is there, can be stunning and lends itself to beautiful photography.
Clare & Josh’s wedding at the amazing Ritz Carlton was one I’d been looking forward to all year. I could tell from our discussions and emails that their day was going to be something truly unique and personal to them as a couple, just as it should be, but I was still in for a few surprises along the way.
The day began with me meeting the girls, and boy, at the Ritz where they were all starting to get ready for the day’s events. It was great to finally meet Clare in person. I felt we already knew each other fairly well just from our online chats and phone and Skype conversations. Everyone was in good spirits and the girls from were doing their thing with Shannon from Blowups By Shannon doing hair and Charlotte Marie Flannery doing everyone’s make-up.
My second shooter Maurizio headed over to where the boys were getting ready and captured some great moments over there before joining us at the hotel.
The cold weather meant that we weren’t able to get as many couple portraits outside as I would’ve liked but Clare & Josh were champions and braved the sub-zero temperatures for a few shots. Luckily the inside of the venue is so great, with impressive classic architecture mixed with some quirky modern touches, that we could get some great images in the warmth.
Clare’s family are from Scotland and her mom and brother flew over the Atlantic to be with her on the day. Sadly, due to ill health, her Dad couldn’t make the journey. There was a lovely, emotional moment when he called her as she was getting ready. His presence was certainly missed throughout the day but I hope he can relive the wedding through the photographs. That’s why I never take what I do for a living for granted. Every wedding is so important to the families involved.
The ceremony was beautiful, and very personal, as Clare & Josh stood surrounded by family to exchange vows. There were a few tears shed!
The rest of the day was all about having fun with their favourite people. Clare is a swing dancer, and so are many of her closest friends, so the standard of dancing all day was next level! Josh managed to surprise his bride with a secret singalong of one of their favourite songs, accompanied by their fantastic live band.
It was also a pleasure to finally work with the guys from Ioan Films.
Congratulations and huge thanks to both Clare & Josh. We had a blast!
