Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it – Ferris Bueller
This has been a long time in the making… but, finally, we’re proud to deliver our brand new website into the big wide world.
It all started in May 2012 when I was in New York to shoot Natasha & Marc’s oh-so-cool wedding. While I was there I managed to attend a one-day workshop with a couple of my fave photographers, Jeremy Cowart and Joey L. As part of the workshop Jeremy invited people to volunteer themselves for a website critique. I was pretty confident so threw my name into the ring. We’d had plenty of great comments about our site in the past and I knew the photography wasn’t too shabby either.
Jeremy instantly let loose on the website! I’d met him once before and he told me that what he saw in the branding didn’t match the person he’d chatted to at all. It was too “nice”. He thought the logo was too generic and that my personality wasn’t represented well at all. Initially I was taken aback but, as he spoke, I realised that everything he was saying was totally right. I went from feeling deflated to feeling excited and positive and ready to make changes. When the day was done I chatted to Evelyne on Skype from my hotel and she wholeheartedly agreed that we needed to switch things up. A lot!
In fact, Evelyne was so excited about rebranding that, by the time I returned from New York, we had a whole stack of ideas for the new brand. We looked around for a cool designer and stumbled across Modern Dog. They were based in Seattle and their work was so cool that we were convinced they’d be out of our price range, but after chatting with Robynne via Skype and hearing how into our ideas she was, we were able to come to an agreement and the first stages of the rebranding were under way.
The first few logo ideas were great, but we knew that we were going in the wrong direction. We just weren’t excited enough about any of them. We needed something more unique to us. Maybe something a little edgier. We shared stuff on Pinterest with Modern Dog… Black Keys posters, album artwork, Obey prints, our favourite photos and plenty more… And then they sent some new logo ideas over. The first one we saw is the one you see right in the middle of our Home Page. We breathed a sigh of relief.
We loved what Modern Dog came up with so much that we asked if they’d be up for designing our Home Page too. We wanted something that grabbed the viewer’s attention immediately. We also wanted something that would instantly let people know that we’re not traditional wedding photographers. Our Home Page might put off as many people as it attracts. And that’s exactly how we like it! 🙂
The rest of the site has been put together by Chris and Callum at Abstraktion. They’ve adapted our ideas well. We wanted to keep the rest of our site clean, simple, easy to navigate, with large images and we wanted to finally lose any sign of Flash. We also wanted something that worked well on phones and iPads. Hopefully, what we have here ticks all boxes.
Ironically, as soon as we decided we needed to change the website completely, we started getting more comments than usual from people saying how much they like the old site! Hopefully, they’ll like this one more. I know we do.
One other thing I wanted for the new site is a Journal page. You’re reading it right now. This is where I can write about anything I feel like and share images which I wouldn’t post on the blog, Instagram pictures, videos I like, bands I discover, random thoughts, news, experiences, opinions….. basically anything I think people might find interesting or useful. I’ve told Evelyne I’m gonna update the journal at least every other day. She doesn’t believe me! I’ll try to prove her wrong 🙂
Thanks to Evelyne, Jeremy Cowart, the good folks at Modern Dog, Abstraktion, Bianca for designing our pdf, you for checking our site out and all our amazing clients for allowing us to do this photography thing we love so much. We appreciate it more than we can say. Onwards & upwards….
